Where did the Dravidian languages come from? For a century the honest answer was "unknown." But the linguistics, the ancient DNA, the Y-chromosome record, and the archaeology have begun to converge on one story — and it does not begin in the south. It begins between the Iranian plateau and the Indus, in the world of ancient Elam.

In 1974, in the journal Language, David McAlpin demonstrated that the Dravidian family is cognate with Elamite — the ancient language of southwest Iran, spoken at Susa, the rival and neighbour of Sumer. His evidence was not loose resemblance. He paired Elamite words — mostly verb stems, the hardest part of a language to borrow — with Dravidian terms from the Burrow-Emeneau Dravidian Etymological Dictionary, and found systematic phonological correspondences in the word-roots and in the verbal morphology. Shared grammar, not just shared vocabulary. That is what turns a resemblance into a relationship.
Languages borrow nouns easily — trade-words, names for new things. They almost never borrow the core machinery of verbs and grammar. When two languages share that, in regular sound-correspondences, the usual explanation is common descent. This is the Elamo-Dravidian hypothesis: Dravidian and Elamite branch from one ancestor, Proto-Elamo-Dravidian, in the West Asian / Zagros world.

The striking thing is that the DNA evidence was gathered to answer a different question, and it landed on McAlpin's map.
A distinct "Proto-Dravidian" ancestral component ~4,400 years old, carried by the Koraga tribe, emerging near the dawn of the Indus civilisation — branching from the Middle-Eastern component behind Iranian-plateau farmer ancestry. The authors state it fits the Elamo-Dravidian theory and the Dravidian family tree.
A paternal lineage with a West Asian origin ~20,600 years ago, paralleling Iranian-plateau hunter-gatherer ancestry. One branch moved into South Asia ~8,000–6,000 years ago and "likely participated in the spread of Dravidian languages," expanding ~4,000–3,000 years ago as steppe ancestry arrived.

A 2025 review in Mother Tongue pulled the threads together and concluded that the recent archaeogenetics support the Proto-Elamo-Dravidian model of McAlpin and Southworth — though that journal sits in the contested long-range-comparison tradition, so the weight here rests on the primary sources (McAlpin in Language, Pathak in iScience), not the review. The convergence is the finding. When linguistics, autosomal DNA, the Y-chromosome, and a phylogenetic clock — gathered independently — agree on a West-Asian-to-Indus origin, that agreement is stronger than any single line alone. This is the platform's method: show the reader the lines meeting.

If Elamo-Dravidian holds, one consequence follows, and it is the platform's own reading of the evidence: the Indus-periphery population was plausibly Elamo-Dravidian-speaking — arriving from the Iranian-farmer direction, exactly the ancestry the ancient-DNA studies find in the Indus Periphery Cline. And Dravidian, on this reading, was not born in the south — it was pushed south, as Indo-Aryan spread across the north after the Indus decline, surviving in the peninsula where it had once been part of a far wider northwestern world.
This is the platform stating where it thinks the evidence leans — and labelling it as such. The Indus script is undeciphered; no text confirms the language. But the convergence of four independent sciences on the Iranian-plateau-to-Indus corridor makes "the Indus world was Dravidian-related" the best-supported reading currently available — stronger than the alternatives, and honestly short of proof. supported reading · not proven
